A note from the President:

Greetings, fellow AIRPOites!

I hope everyone’s semester is winding down well, and that you all have a wonderful break with your friends and families, hopefully in some place warmer than here!

I thought now might be a good time for a few updates and reminders, so here goes:

Speaking with people at the June meeting, at NEAIR a couple weeks ago, and consulting with the AIRPO officers, I found broad agreement with the principle of going with a combination of a webinar and regional meetings this winter. We agreed that the webinar format was best suited for SUNY updates and trainings if applicable, and not as well suited for research presentations, which would be better for regional meetings or the annual meeting.

  • Regarding the webinar, Peter Brickman, our SUNY System Admin sector rep, is in the process of conversations with other folks at System Admin to figure out suggested topics and times/dates. (Thanks, Peter!) I’ll keep you posted as things develop. The last couple years the webinars have been in January.
  • Regional meetings are entirely up to whoever is willing to set them up – the regions themselves, the length, the format and the content are all wide open. I am told that in the past there used to be regular regional gatherings in Western NY and in the Central NY/Fingerlakes region, so those would be good to resurrect. Bob Karp has offered to do something in the Northern Tier, which means that if someone wants to do something in the Capital Region and the Southern Tier, we would have a complete box set! Please let me know if you are interested in hosting something. Again, it could be anything from an informal chat over coffee or lunch to a more extensive and formal program – it’s entirely up to you! Let’s try to have those in late winter or early spring so they don’t conflict with the annual meeting.
  • The Annual Meeting is scheduled for June 13-15 in Albany at the Crowne Plaza (soon to be Hotel Albany and eventually the Albany Hilton, but it’s the same hotel. They have renovations planned between now and then, so I am also checking with a couple other options as fallback plans in case they are not finished on time.) I would love to get volunteers for Program Chair and Local Arrangements Chair squared away so we can get the planning underway right after the holidays.

Let me know if you’re interested in helping out, with the webinar, the regional meetings, or the annual meeting. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Joel
